Five Year Fridays
Today is Friday. Think about a Friday five years from now. Get a good image of that Friday and answer these questions. Write them down. (I got this idea from Marjorie Blanchard)
Where do you live?
Who lives with you?
What does your day look like, what are you doing?
What are you excited about?
What general observations stand out?
Then, think about five more years. Then five more, and so on and so forth.
For me, that’s age 47,52,57,62 and 67.
What theme appears?
What do you see emerging that you may not have realized?
I had Robin do this and we compared notes. It’s a fun exercise - but an emotional one. It’s emotional because you feel the season come, and go. You feel your kids leaving, your parents passing and new seasons birthing.
Having a vision of the future can and should shape decisions we make today. Are you living and focusing on the most important things? Time keeps on ticking.
Earlier this week I wrote about our Life.Church Digerati Ship it Week. This is quite possibly my favorite week(s) of the year. You can read all the details here.
Be a voice, not a brand
I have shared this article before but thought I would circle back to it. When Sheryl Sandberg speaks, it’s worth listening.
Focus on developing your voice, she says. Figuring out what’s important to you and being willing to use your voice for that purpose is incredibly valuable. “If you are doing it to develop your personal brand, it’s empty and self-serving and not about what you’re talking about,” she says. “If you’re doing it because there is something you want to see changed in the world, that’s where it will have value and depth and integrity.” - Sheryl Sandberg
97, 98, 99, 100!
100 Americans die EVERYDAY from opioid overdose. It’s a tragic and sickening epidemic. I found this Skimm Guide helpful to understand the crisis a bit better.
The growth and development of people is the highest calling in leadership. - Harry Firestone
