Dispatch w.42.2017
Hey all, I wanted to take a moment and thank so many of you for your reply emails, and comments about my last writing Running Too Hot. I know this topic is near and dear to me, but it seems like it resonated with many of you as well. I always appreciate your reply emails - even if it might take me a while to respond.
Don’t forget how easy it is to share this newsletter. There are three simple options to share, or you can merely click “Forward” in your email and send it to your friends who you think would enjoy it, or get value from it. Share away; I appreciate it.
This week I wanted to take a different approach to the dispatch. This is more of a peek into my mind, and what I am processing and thinking in a more random way. Here we go.
WHAT IS NEW IN THE STORCH FAMILY?
We just completed our 30-day digital detox. No social media, and limited device access in the home. Honestly, after a few days of breaking old habits, I did not miss much. Sure I felt the FOMO (fear of missing out), but after a while that went away and my core relationships were still healthy and intact, shocking I know. We have social back now, but we are using time limits on the girl's usage with Circle. YouTube and Instagram have a 1.5-hour time limit per day. We also integrated digital discussions into our regular family conversations.
WHAT BOOK DO I THINK ABOUT WRITING? (But won't write)
How to Navigate the Midlife Crisis Well. These past few weeks I have had countless conversations with 40-50yr old men who are are navigating the seasons of mid-life. I have also learned that 7 out of 10 of the suicides in America are men between 45-65. Shocking and sad! This is a topic close to me clearly because of my age but also because I am watching many of my friends and acquaintances walk through this season of life, not all in a healthy way. I genuinely believe it’s possible to walk through this season honoring Christ and not impulsively buying a Corvette, sleeping with a prostitute or turning to addictive substances. I am far from an expert on this topic or many others, but my heart breaks for those who are struggling in this season of life and don't have the right people to turn to and be open with.
WHAT “NEW THING” AM I TRYING?
So many things I could talk about here, but let me share about my new addition to my morning routine. I won't unpack my full morning system, but I will share that I have added listening to an additional teaching three times a week in the mornings. We are so blessed by my pastor Craig Groeschel and his teachings each week - they challenge my family and me and sharpen us in a powerful way. Craig’s latest series, My Big Fat Mouth is amazing if you have not listened. However, I desire to continue to grow and expand my inputs and learnings. This past week on Monday I was challenged by The Principle of Priority, Wednesday was around Wisdom and The Simple and The Subtle and Saturday was Practicing The Way with Silence and Solitude.
WHAT AM I LISTENING TO ON SPOTIFY?
Mosaic MSC - absolutely love tapping shuffle play and letting the songs randomly come in. AWESOME worship.
WHAT DO I RECOMMEND ON NETFLIX?
I just finished Manhunt: UNABOMBER on Netflix. Originally a Discovery Channel 8 part docu-drama going deep into the story of Ted Kaczynski. Wow, I got lost in this series and loved it. So well done, I highly recommend watching the series.
WHAT CAUSED ME TO “THINK” OR CONTEMPLATE THE MOST THIS WEEK?
I have spent a lot of time researching and learning about Blockchain technology and cryptocurrency the past few years. This week I watched Vitalik Buterin, founder of Ethereum interviewed during Disrupt SF. Watching this makes me think deeply about how our future will look different because of Blockchain technology.
“Without solitude, it is virtually impossible to live a spiritual life...We do not take the spiritual life seriously if we do not set aside some time to be with God and listen to Him” - Henri Nouwen
