China
I am continually fascinated with China and the overall growth explosion of the country. I had the opportunity to visit Beijing as well as Hong Kong, and it is absolutely amazing. Just let this soak in: 7 of the 20 largest cities in the world are in China.
We see and hear about China's trade wars, tariffs and communism in the news nearly every day...but is this the full picture? I am far from being an expert, but what I absolutely know is this; China plays a massive part in our lives and will have even more of an impact on future generations. Christianity in China
Much discussion and debate exist on the subject of Christianity in China. I asked a good friend who lives in Beijing and regularly travels to California to give us some perspective on our media coverage, and what’s reality in China today. Here are three articles he recommended:
1. This article on the Guardian mentioned what happened to the Zion Church in Beijing. Large congregations are forbidden in major cities like Beijing and to avoid conflict, typically large house churches must divide into smaller groups.
2. This article emphasized what is happening in the Henan province. The region has the largest population and most likely is home to the largest number of Christians in China. Henan's believers face fierce persecution as the authority has begun tearing down crosses and church buildings. Bibles, Prayer books, and Psalm books have been destroyed. Children's Sunday School has been shut down and even some churches have been forced to close. What happened to churches in Zhejiang in 2015-2016 is happening to Henan in 2018.
3. This article on the Diplomat mentioned the CCP's strategy to 'sinicize Christianity', which I believe accurately depicts the intentions of the authority to Christianity. To eliminate Christianity is impossible, which they have learned from the experience of USSR and China in the past totalitarian era. The new leaders are trying, instead, to transform Christianity into a way that is more "acceptable" to them by guiding believers to "love the Party and the Nation", to become "adapted to the traditional culture of China", and "to unite believers under the leadership of the Party".
